Journal entries by soldiers in Sherman’s army give a personal view of April 1865 and support details in the drawing.
Out of the 42 known Taylor drawing in the Becker Collection 27 were produced in the Civil War Era (1864-1865). These will serve as our controls. The Materials: all 27 are drawn with graphite (3 contain some ink writing); all 26 are on “woven paper” of which 8 are on a “heavy gauge woven paper;” this material is common during the Civil War; the sizes of the drawings vary, most between 5’’x9.7’’ and 9.57’’x13.25’’.
